History

Mother of God Church was founded by Fr. Msgr. John Herrijgers, C.M. The name of the church, Mother of God, was chosen for three reasons. First, its location is in Tien Mu, which in Chinese means “Heavenly Mother.” Second, its founder celebrated his birthday on the Mother of God feast day. Third, the first foundation brick for the church was also laid by him on this same important feast day.

For over 50 years, our church has been a place of worship for the English-speaking community every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday, when English Masses are held. The parish community is made up of people from all over the world, and the church’s close proximity to the Taipei American School attracts many English-speaking families to the congregation.

Most Masses are celebrated in English or Chinese, but with sufficient demand, there are sometimes Masses in other languages, such as French and Spanish.

One of the active services in the parish church is the provision of religious education classes. On most Sundays from September to May, volunteer teachers provide religious instruction. Generally, students who are 7 to 8 years old prepare to receive the Sacraments of Holy Eucharist and Reconciliation for the first time, and students who are 12 to 13 years old prepare to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.

A number of children and adults are also given instruction in preparation to receive the Sacrament of Baptism. Marriage preparation and wedding ceremonies are also held for engaged couples.
